Red-chested sea cucumber (Hemiocnus insolens)

Previously known as Cucumaria insolens, Trachythyone insolens or Pseudocnella insolens.

Colour diagnostic. Intertidal specimens may be dark above with a red ‘chest’, but subtidal ones are uniformly bright red. Tube feet scattered dorsally, but in three bands of two or three rows each on the underside. Ten irregularly-branched tentacles.

About 40 mm.

A small species found in dense colonies covering shallow reefs. The young are brooded in pockets in the skin and can often be seen clinging to the surface of the parent. Found on the West Coast of South Africa, and extending eastwards to Port Elizabeth.
