
Two subspecies are present in South Africa : Roweia frauenfeldii subsp. frauenfeldii on the West and South coasts, and R. frauenfeldii subsp. webbi on the East Coast.
Body arched into a typical U-shape, dark above and grey below. Tubefeet are grouped into five bands, each made up of 4 to 6 rows (2 to 3 rows towards the ends of the body). Ten irregularly-branched tentacles.
Typically 70 to 80 mm.
A crevice-dwelling species. Cape specimens are usually found under sand with only the tentacles and the anus projecting, the remainder of the body being firmly attached to a rock buried beneath the sediment surface.
