Carapace very smooth, except for a granular ‘chest’. Sides of carapace convex, lacking marginal teeth, although a single low tooth lies just outside each eye. Nippers smooth. Body black or dark brown near the front, blending into a grey-green network towards the back. Legs orange to brown, flecked red.
About 30 mm.
Lives high on the shore, often aggregating densely under and among boulders, as well as in rock crevices, in search for shelter. The species can apparently withstand great variations in salinity, as it has also been recorded in river estuaries. Scavenges by night during low tide, feeding mostly on drift seaweeds, but also animal matter.
