
Plants yellow-brown, forming thin, globose cushions of compacted branching tubes, irregularly furrowed and convoluted. Surface covered with knobbly protuberances. Thalli at first solid but older plants becoming hollow in the center.
Up to 10 cm in diameter and 3 to 4 cm high.
Epilithic or epiphytic in the lower intertidal, especially in rock pools. Favours sheltered rock platforms and shallow pools at mid-tide level.

Iyengaria stellata has a rather peculiar distribution, as well as a very close relationship with the genus Colpomenia (Santañiez et al. 2020). The taxonomic status of I. stellata is thus still in need of investigation.
