Bushy yellow-brown plants with a triangular stem, small air-floats and two types of blades, attached to the substrate by a large conical holdfast that bears one or several strong perennial stems. The lower ‘leaves’ are oval and marginally toothed, while the upper fronds are small and spear-shaped, with smooth margins. Patterns of darker brown color visible on most of the blades. Fertile branches form inconspicuous small cylindrical tufts.
Up to 50-60 cm high.
Common in deep gulleys and pools. Thrives in high-tide pools warmed by the sun.
Two Oceans: a guide to the marine life of Southern Africa (2016); Seaweeds of the South African South Coast [Sargassum incisifolium].
Sargassum incisifolium can be confounded with Sargassum elegans (present on the South Coast of South Africa), which is similar but with a cylindrical stem. Sargasum heterophyllum C. Agardh and Fucus heterophyllus Turner are recorded as heterotypic synonyms of S. incisifolium (Mattio et al. 2015).
