Crab hoping to intimidate its handler. Assegaai Trails, Eastern Cape (2020) – iNat

Purple, reddish-brown or greenish-brown carapace, fairly uniform in color. Tips of dactyli – the part of the legs that touch the ground – and chelipeds usually displaying a lighter orange color.

Smooth to lightly granulated carapace at the flanks and epibranchial regions. Cephalothorax flat, wide, almost rectangular in frontal aspect. Branchial region flat, forming an angle with the anterolateral margin. Anterolateral margin slightly scabrous, complete, smooth with occasional faint granulation. Grooves well-defined on the cephalothorax.

Long slender pereiopods or primary walking legs, also used to gather food. Chelipeds have an inflated propodus, which is a segment making up the ‘palm’ of the pincher.
