Southern periwinkle (Afrolittorina knysnaensis)

Aperture rounded and closed by a transparent, horny operculum. Shell smooth, with a short conical spire. Colour from flecked brown with a dark ring around each coil to almost pure black.

Usually under 10 mm.

Congregates in crevices, or hangs from the hot rock by a mucus thread on the heat of day. Emerges at night, or on moist days, to feed. Juveniles occur highest on the shore to avoid wave action. Adults have a stronger attachment and are found lower on the shore, where food is plentiful.
