Pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis)

A large, black-and-white kingfisher, with a long, black bill and short crest. Male has a double breast band, while female has a single, incomplete breast band.
Juveniles like females, but with the feathers from chin to breast edged buff.

23 – 25 cm. 70 – 110 g.

Common resident at freshwater wetlands, coastal lagoons and tidal pools. Feeds from perches, but also frequently hovers over water, plunging in to catch mainly fish prey. Often seen in small groups. Breeds cooperatively.
