Trumpeter hornbill (Bycanistes bucinator)

A medium to large, black-and-white hornbill. Smaller than the silvery-cheeked hornbill, with a white belly and lower breast, a black (not white) back and a smaller, darker bill. In fight, it has white trailing edges to its wings and white underwing coverts. Uppertail coverts white. At close range, it has pinkish-red (not blue) eye skin.

Female has a smaller bill and casque, while juvenile has almost no casque.

50 – 65 cm. 480 – 900 g.

Common resident and local nomad in lowland, coastal and riverine evergreen forests, as well as well-wooded suburbs.
