
Body off-white. First pair of antennae much shorter than second. Last three pairs of legs are elongated and splayed to the sides to support the animal upright.
Second pair of legs bear large nippers in males.Between 10 and 20 mm.
A familiar, air-breathing scavenger found in vast numbers at or above the drift-line of sandy beaches. Often concealed under drift material, exploding into activity if disturbed. At night, it hops clumsily about the beach in search of freshly deposited seaweed. Shortly before dawn, it returns up the beach and burrows into the dry sand.
