
A short and round little bird, very familiar, curious and not so shy.
Male is mostly black – head, back and wings – with white brows and mirrors on the wings, white throat and belly with a rufous chest patch. But males displays a polymorphism and can be very similar to the females.
Female is the duller replica of the male, with a greyish head, a cream-coloured brow and a rufous chest and belly.
Young is identical to the female, but with pale brown spots on the chest and cream-coloured spots on the head and back.12.5 cm. 10.5 – 15 g.
Endemic to Reunion Island and a typical bird of the ‘Heights’ (les Hauts). Found in most native habitats, preferentially in forests between 600 and 2,800 meter high, but down to the coast in the wild South.
SEOR.
Reproduction occurs between September and January. Nest on the ground, hidden under a grass tuft or a branch and containing 2 – 4 pale blue-green eggs speckled with red.
Feed essentially on insects (butterflies and their caterpillars, grasshoppers, aphids and other bugs) but sometimes hunt earthworms and molluscs. Doesn’t disdain breadcrumbs from a friendly hiker.
