The phylum Platyhelminthes include parasitic flukes, tapeworms and free-living flatworms. The southern African fauna is poorly known. There are many spectacular but unnamed species, especially in the tropics.
Free-living flatworms have simple. flattened, leaf-life bodies, and glide along on a bed a fine hairs or by ripples of muscular contraction. A flexible tubular proboscis traps prey such as small crustaceans and mollusks. The gut ends blindly without any anus.
Flatworms are hermaphroditic but cross-fertilize. Partners then lay strings of large yolky eggs.
