
Larger than the Southern double-collared sunbird, with a long, heavier bill.
Male has a broader, red breast band bordered above by a violet-blue band, with yellow pectoral tufts. Female grey-brown above, paler below. Immature male has only a few red breast feathers, sometimes a narrow breast band.
14 cm. 10 – 18 g.
Common resident in tall shrubs, forest fringes, clearings and gardens.
