The term ‘limpet’ is applied to any mollusk with a cape-shaped shell. It includes both ‘true’ limpets of the subclass Prosobranchia, with a ring of gills around the foot, and ‘false’ limpets of the subclass Pulmonata, which lack gills, are hermaphroditic, and are closely related to land snails.
Both groups are herbivores and use a rasping, ribbon-like tongue to graze on algae.
